In our anticipation and excitement of possible moves, we have taken to lay down 10 “unsettled” African stars in the English top flight, the Premier League. The Nigerian who hung up his international boots earlier this year also finds himself on the list.

There are a number of African players dubbed to be the next Sergio Ramos and Xavis of this world but are currently unsettled at club level. Their potential is endangered by their lack of game time. Here’s a list of the XI players whose progress has stalled. What better time to look at these than now when the January transfer window is fast encroaching?
RW – Victor Moses
At times, we make sacrifices in life with the hope of gaining a lot from those hard decisions. Often times, it pays off except for those specific times when the luck is not on our side. I think this best describes Victor Moses’ decision to retire from the national team to focus on his Chelsea career. The former Nigerian international resigned from playing for the Super Eagles shortly after the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia before Sarri was announced as the new Chelsea boss. The Italian then made his way to the West London club and has since preferred Willian and Pedro ahead of him. In pre-season, Callum Hudson-Odoi who has a Ghanaian heritage shined in his absence and even more, the club is being linked to the unsettled Manchester United forward, Anthony Martial.
Verdict: I think the club is pushing the 27-year-old out. A team like West Ham can benefit from a player of his traits.

CM: Daniel Amartey
We all know the importance of versatile players in the squad who can come in and get the job done in the absence of specialists in that specific position. Leicester FC have their own in Daniel Amartey who is comfortable playing out of position in the right-back and centre-back roles. The problem comes when the player is then seen as just a stop-measure for that position and not as an expert in their own field. For example, Amartey is now being seen in the RB position more than in the midfield after the club invested in other “dirty” workers like Wilfred Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy.
Verdict: It looks unlikely that the 23-year-old will usurp Ndidi, so he should consider making the right-back position his own like Lauren did in Arsenal’s Invincibles season.
Is there a big club who does not want Napoli & Senegalese's Koulibaly?
Kalidou Koulibaly is now easily one of the best centre-backs in the world if not the best. His displays in the Italian Serie A, UEFA Champions League and even at the 2018 FIFA World Cup have made him a highly experienced asset bound to become the world’s most expensive defender if he switches clubs. A potential move looks imminent as the top clubs circle the 27-year-old.

When I was growing up, all I knew was that nothing sells better than hot cookies on a cold day. But, now that I am this old I have realized that talent sells more than anything in soccer. Kalidou Koulibaly has seen this “my phenomenon” come true in his life, as every day, he and Napoli have to continuously reject big European clubs that want to add him to their squads. What is it that these clubs are really looking to get from the Senegalese defender?
A precious gift for Mourinho after failing to land Alderweireld
Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils, did not even go behind the walls to admit this but backed his wish to have the 27-year-old Senegalese defender in his team by tabling an £80 million offer. Even though this is an incredible price for a defender (which would surpasses the world record defender fee of £75m), reports insist that Napoli player demanded £90 million for what they have groomed with intricate care. It is not, however, clear if the Red Devils will succumb to this demand but all we know is that, right now, Koulibaly is still doing bits at Napoli.
Chelsea have their eyes on him
During the World Cup, Chelsea also had their eyes set on the Senegalese “wall,” impressed by Koulibaly’s physique that enables him to make short passes while keeping an eagle’s eye on the opponent. He was voted amongst the Top 11’ at the annual Oscar del Calcio gala last November. Chelsea tried their luck with €100 million but it was not enough to tempt the Italian club. The response was a straight up “Koulibaly is not for sale.”
Even Liverpool wanted a piece of Koulibaly
At some point before acquiring the Virgil Van Dyk in a current record deal for a defender Liverpool also tried their luck with a £36.7million bid and they too got the same rejection. Even though Koulibaly did express that he would be interested in playing for a Premier League club (not specifically Liverpool), right now he has to stay with Napoli. But will he really?

The catch
If the player is in such high demand, why can’t his club really let him go? The player has a contract that obligates him to be with Napoli until the June of 2023 so that is why his club has such a strong grip on his negotiations. At least, all these clubs have about 5 years to sweeten their deals, polish their approaches and spice up their baits until they get hold of this player. The player is also personally committed to the team and his coach. He was reported saying, my coach “rediscovered me, he gave me confidence. He really is a genius, he sees things others don’t see. He makes you understand how football is and isn’t predictable.”
After all is said and done, take my word for it, it looks like it’s going to become increasingly harder to keep the one of the world’s finest of not “the finest”. A potential move is imminent. The real question is when?

CM – Mohamed Elneny
Egyptian international Mo Elneny is no newcomer to this feisty topic about African talent being wasted in some of the top clubs in Europe. The 26-year old looks comfortable being used as a fringe player in the post-Arsene Wenger era at The Arsenal. There are not many midfielders with his passing range in the locker but a lot of questions are raised about his defensive contribution. Compared to the other midfielders in the Arsenal team, he looks a part but does not offer something extra to make him stand out ahead of Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey. Maybe his best position is as a box-to-box midfielder free of defensive duties and Arsenal will not offer him that.
Verdict: The Egyptian should find a smaller club like Bournemouth, Burnley or Huddersfield where he can cement a starting berth and break teams on the counter with his quick passes.

As the South African women’s football team soar to great heights and celebrate new glories, could the glory be fading on their male counterparts, the once upon a time African champions? Siphosethu Thwala unpacks all this in the above piece.

It is an open secret that most South African football lovers consider the National women’s team to be better than the men’s team, Banyana Banyana, and their showing in the AFCON women’s cup pays testimony to such assertions.
Led by the evergreen Desiree Ellis, Banyana Banyana have been dishing out stellar performances at the soon to end Women’s championships in Ghana and they have done the impossible as they have not only secured a place in the final of the AWCON against rivals Nigeria, but they have also booked themselves a spot in the women’s FIFA world cup in France next year! Quite remarkable if you ask me.

On one side, Bafana Bafana have been struggling for results to help them qualify for the upcoming 2019 AFCON tournament whose venue is yet to be confirmed after Cameroon was stripped of the hosting rights. At present, Bafana sit second in their group, behind Nigeria who have already secured their qualification at the back of the draw with Bafana Bafana in early November. As such, Stuart Baxter's men need at least a point against Libya in their last game in order to seal their qualification. The inconsistent performances have certainly not helped the team’s fortunes as more criticism has continued to fall over them, with some even calling for Stuart Baxter’s sacking. To add, Bafana's failure to qualify for any of the major international competitions since the 2010 FIFA world cup (which they qualified as hosts) has rather tarnished the team’s reputation and raised more questions from the football fraternity.
On the other hand, Banyana Banyana have been growing in leaps and bounds. The quality of their football has consistently improved over time. Unlike the men’s team, Banyana Banyana do not get as much resources compared to their male colleagues and yet, they have been able to put in consistent performances for a long time now. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Bafana Bafana. Such positive showing has drawn the attention of most South Africans who have called on the South African football body, SAFA, for Banyana Banyana to receive the same kind of remuneration, perks, benefits and sponsorship monies as their male counterparts, Bafana Bafana.
With all being said, perhaps for some it is not a black or white answer regarding which is the better team, taking into account the differing dynamics in which both sides play in. However, Banyana Banyana have slowly emerged as the only silver lining representing the South African nation in international football.
On a lighter note, many are fanying a Bafana Bafana match up against the Ladies team in order to see who is better. Are Banyana better than Bafana?
2019 AWCON: One last dance for SA & Nigeria as the women cap off a superb tourney
This is it ladies and gentlemen. The final tango of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is here. The most successful team on the continent facing the challenge of the most promising. Time to pick favorites.

Nigeria and South Africa will play each other in the 2018 AWCON finals this Saturday. The winners will be crowned the champions of the continent for the next two years.

The tournament has come full circle as these two teams will meet for the second time in the finals of the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles conceded a crucial goal in the first encounter and lost the match. Banyana Banyana have played the entire tournament with the same energy and vigour they had during that euphoric 1-0 win. On Tuesday, Banyana dismissed Mali in the semi-final in which they put two goals past Les Aigles without any response from the West African side. While Nigeria had earlier beat out Cameroon in a penalty shoot-out where Cameroonian star player Gaëlle Enganamouit failed to convert from the spot.
South Africa is on the threshold of making history and claiming their very first AWCON title. The 2-0 semi-final victory over Mali already ensures that they will be at the FIFA World Cup in France next year. All eyes are on head coach Desiree Ellis to see whether or not she will be able to do the amazing and lead South Africa to both their first world cup appearance and their first continental cup trophy. The coach who led SA to the 2018 COSAFA title triumph has done an incredible job with the team so far and could be bound for the spectacular.

The Nigerians are very familiar with this stage of the tournament, making it to the finals more times than any other team on the continent. As defending champions, the pressure is on them to assert their dominance over their highly motivated counterparts. The Super Falcons have been less impressive than their foes from the south in this tournament. Despite this, head coach Thomas Dennerby is confident that they can overcome Banyana Banyana to lift the trophy for the 11th time come Saturday.

DM – Victor Mugubi Wanyama
Enough has been said already about the Kenyan defensive midfielder who is finding minutes very hard to come by at Wembley Stadium (Tottenham Hotspur’s temporary home stadium). Mauricio Pochettino was right to identify the player as the solution to the hole in the middle that had been left by Sandro at Tottenham. In all fairness, the player was thrown straight into the team and shined in his first season at the club in the 2016/17 English Premier League season. He however, has been ousted by the likes of Harry Winks, Eric Dier and even Moussa Sissoko. Wanyama is currently being played in the cup games against lesser teams whilst Pochettino’s first preferences are given a necessary break. This is an unusual situation for a player who was one of the first names on the team sheet at both Celtic and Southampton before his big move to the North London club. At 27, the player is reaching his prime years and cannot be wasted warming the bench at Tottenham when he is more than capable of competing for a first team position within the defensive midfield role at any top club in Europe.
Verdict: He should drop his CV by Manchester City and Arsenal’s doors as he walks out of White Hart Lane.
FT Sideline: Why has Aubameyang been so prolific?
The Gabonese captain has seamlessly switched to the Emirates stadium and has quickly become one of the Premier League’s most respected strikers. With 20 goals for Arsenal in 31 matches and joint EPL top scorer alongside Sergio Aguero this season, the numbers are starting to look like his Dortmund days. But what makes him tick?

There is no use trying to make a case why Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one of the best strikers in the world, simply because everyone knows and vehemently agree. It’s a better use of time exploring what makes him tick, with the hope that such attributes can be learned and passed down to future generations of African and global strikers at large.
It is know that modern strikers usually go through what is famously knowns as a “goal drought,” September used to be a boogey month for Harry Kane, Suarez is relatively going through a drought right now at Barcelona despite the impressive overall performances, Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku and the list goes on and on. The point is that the barren periods are almost part and parcel of a striker’s package. But, that’s not Aubameyang. The Gabonese captain has been scoring at least 30 goals a season since 2015 at Borussia Dortmund and before that, as a developing footballer in France and other places, he would hit at least half of the thirty goals. He was never an out and out striker to begin with, he just recently developed this goal scoring wit and has never looked back. But why is he immune to the droughts? Why is he so prolific?
Here are two simple reasons why:
1. Simplicity, the ultimate sophistication

It’s modern “wisdom” that a good striker should contribute to overall play of the team, tracking back to help with defensive duties on set pieces, holding up play, taking on defenders, laying up assists for teammates and many other things. Harry Kane is increasingly becoming a member of this bracket after criticism of “selfishness,” Alexandre Lacazette is Arsenal’s version of that “modern striker” and Suarez is not a stranger to such duties at Barcelona. Now, Auba is different. The 29 year-old knows how to score goals and fundamentally sticks to that. His dribbling game is not the best nor is his hold-up play. He usually goes “missing” when his team is on the ropes but at any moment, with the slightest of chances - he can ripple the net. The African striker’s winner over the weekend which bagged all three points for Arsenal resembles this attribute of coming out of nowhere to turn the tide in the favor of his colors. Joking with his teammate, Sead Kolasinac who was the assist provider on the day, Auba even posted on instagram about how he loves tap in goals. He is the kind of guy who does not clutter his game with a lot of “best practices” or “modern tactics” but does one thing well enough to dominate the rest. No wonder he is currently joint-top scorer with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero in the Premier League tied at 8 goals for the campaign. It’s this “one dimensional” play that has enabled him to reach 20 goals in 31 matches for the Gunners, quicker than the time Thierry Henry or legend Ian Wright took.
2. Lightning pace
Lightning and Auba usually go in the same sentence because he is that quick. EA Sports didn’t rate him the fastest play on FIFA 18 for no reason. It is this pace that aids him to latch on crosses the quickest and make a meal of no ingredients at all. Those tap in goes and numerous strikes inside the box, it’s never because defenders do not know what he will probably do, they just can’t catch him.

Conclusively, Arsenal look like they are more than sorted in their attack with Lacazette complimenting the Gabonese in numerous ways. They will however need to continuously learn to play to his strengths if they are going to get the most out of the Gabonese international.
2019 Women's AFCON Semis: Mali, Cameroon, South Africa & Nigeria go to war
The battle lines have been drawn, three 2019 FIFA World Cup places up for grabs as well as the much coveted Africa Women Cup of Nations gold. The three horses of the West and one representing the whole of Southern Africa - who will drop and who will have glory cast upon them?

Nigeria, Mali, South Africa and Cameroon have made it to the semi finals of the Africa Women’s Cup of nations.
Friday night saw the last Group A matches being played with Ghana taking on Cameroon and Mali taking on Algeria. Ghana failed to recover from the setback of losing to Mali 2-1 in the second group encounter. The Black Queens needed a win to secure a semi final appearance but unfortunately they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cameroon’s fierce Indomitable Lionesses. Mali on the other hand had their date with destiny as they overcame Algeria 3-2.
Nigeria successfully dismissed Equatorial Guinea on Saturday with a 6-0 defeat while South Africa and Zambia drew 1-1. Equatorial Guinea finished at the bottom of Group B standings as the two time champions lost all three of their group stages matches. The very poor performance comes as a huge blow to the Nzalang Nacional who had successfully appealed a ban by CAF to claim their qualification just in the nick of time.Their poor performance is highly indicative of their lack of adequate preparation time despite their successful appeal.
Group A winners Cameroon will now face Nigeria in their semi-final clash on Tuesday. This semi-final will feel to many like a final due to the competitive history of these two giants in the tournament. Nigeria are ten time champions while the Cameroonians are still to claim the title despite being very close on a number of occasions. The last time Cameroon came close to lifting the cup was in the 2016 edition of AWCON when Nigeria dashed their dreams in the final once again as they did in 2014. The Indomitable Lionesses are definitely up to the task of dismissing the Nigerians, however the Super Falcons have never been an easy match for the Cameroonians or vice versa.
“Whenever we play Cameroon, it is always a big fight. We are prepared for the big fight tomorrow and we are sure we will come out victorious. There is no doubt that the Cameroonians have improved from the team we defeated in Yaounde in 2016. But that is expected.”

Banyana Banyana will meet Mali in their semi final encounter which promises to be just as exciting. Banyana Banyana have continued with their pre-tournament form and have been consistently churning out solid performances. Along with combined efforts, Thembi Kgatlana has been a star player and an important asset for South Africa in the attack as well as a goal scoring maestro. Despite their superior group stage performance, Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis is not taking any chances by unrating their west African counterparts. After all, Mali caused the biggest upset thus far after knocking out hosts Ghana to qualify for the semi finals by finishing second in Group A, a fact that the South Africans are very much aware of.
I predict a Nigeria vs South Africa final simply because of South Africa’s superb tournament form and because of Nigeria’s hunger and determination that saw them bouncing back from that initial loss in the first game. Are we going to see South Africa vs Nigeria go head to head in the final or perhaps it will be a Mali vs Cameroon affair? Either way, the teams that claim the first, second and third positions will receive an automatic qualification to the 2019 FIFA World Cup, a goal that will be at the top of the minds for all four countries going into their semi-final showdowns.

LB – Abdul Baba Rahman
Abdul Baba Rahman can be seen by many as a victim of the vicious Chelsea loan system which rarely yields opportunities to the youngsters. The Ghanaian left-back is currently on-loan at Joel Matip’s old club, FC Schalke 04 where he has played only three matches this campaign. When looking at Maurizio Sarri’s style of play, a quick defender with an ability to play quick short passes looks destined to be treasured by the Italian coach in his Chelsea setup, but that’s not yet the case. It has not been the case either for the previous manager Antonio Conte who vetoed moves for Marcos Alonso and even acquired Emerson Palmieri to play ahead of the African defender in the left-back spot. Although Baba Rahman is just 24, the youngster needs a clear picture of the future plans of the club. If he is not careful, he could fall into the trap that swallowed youngsters like Lucas Piazon, Nathaniel Chalobah, Tammy Abraham, and Tomas Kalas whom are unlikely to feature in a Chelsea jersey anytime soon.
Verdict: He should sit down with Chelsea and find out if he is going to be a part of their future plans. If not, he must be allowed to leave this coming summer.

The former Cameroon captain is another African player based in the English Premier League that is finding minutes very hard to come by. Joel Matip has been pushed further away from the first team by the resurgence of Englishman Joe Gomez who has cemented his position alongside Virgil Van Dijk in the centre of the Liverpool team’s defence. Matip, widely regarded as a wall in the German Bundesliga for his heroic antics in blocking threats from his goal, has gradually lost his X-factor at the Anfield club where he is continuously in and out of the team. It seems that he is still the same player from Germany when watching him play but without a guaranteed place in the team.
Verdict: Matip needs a manager who trusts in the 27-year-old’s abilities to fulfil his potential and Klopp is not looking like the right manager for him. There are greener pastures!

The Manchester United centre-back who has been in and out of the team. Eric Bailly was one of the most trusted players by Jose Mourinho in that shaky United defence but has somewhat failed to live up to the Portuguese’ expectations. Bailly has since been criticised by the former Real Madrid head coach and has found himself down the pecking order behind Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and even the returning Marcos Rojo. It is no secret that Bailly has the command, pace and aerial threat to get the job done but needs to learn from his mistakes.
My Verdict: The 24-year-old is at the right club and should up his game to deserve a place in the team.

Brought in from PSG as a direct replacement to Kyle Walker who had left the club to join Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Serge Aurier looked the more likely to start for Tottenham considering his CV and boasting a reputation of stopping Cristiano Ronaldo in his tracks when Paris Saint-Germain faced Real Madrid in a UEFA Champions League match back in 2015. The 25-year-old Ivorian has since been used as a back up to Englishman Kieran Trippier which is an unhealthy situation for a right-back once on course of becoming one of the best in Europe.

3 Africans lighting up the Chinese Super League
African footballers are everywhere, lighting up the stages fortunate enough to have them. The Chinese Super League is not the least of them, as the competition has seen an increase of foreign imports due to the financial backing many of the clubs have. Here are three stars stealing the headlines.
In recent years, players have been moving to the Chinese Super League mostly to wind down their careers. The Chinese have invested billions of dollars into their football project to make it attractive for players. At first, the older players from Europe, the likes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka fit the profiles of the footballers who switched continents and understandably so. However, Oscar’s move from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG at the age of 24 sparked a movement that not many had predicted. Many younger players have since moved to Asia to play in front of the Chinese fans in exchange for a bigger cheque. In this piece, we focus our attentions to the three best African players who have been lighting up the Chinese Super League this year.
Odion Ighalo

Odion Ighalo is first up on the list of the on-form players. The Nigerian international has been potent in front of goal, scoring a total of 21 goals and providing a single assist in just 28 matches. These are Thierry Henry-like stats that the Nigerian is achieving in the Chinese Super League. It is delightful to see the Nigerian regain his confidence in front of goal after a dreadful World Cup outing where he was not his usual self as he fluffed a lot of chances. Ighalo was heavily criticised in the aftermath of the tourney and must have used this criticism to boost his adrenaline and push harder for his club. He has been nothing short of exciting as he has been firing on all cylinders for Changchun Yatai in the Chinese Super League. His goals however, do not reflect the performance of the rest of the team as the club currently ended the season in the 15th position on the table. The defence let in quite a number of goals in the 29 matches they have played this season which has resulted in their automatic relegation to the second division for next season. Rest assured, if they sort out the defence and Odion Ighalo keeps on scoring like he drinks water, his club will be back in the Chinese Super League calendar in no time.
Cedric Bakambu
Then there is Cedric Bakambu who plays for Beijing Guoan. Bakambu has also scored 21 goals and created 4 goals for his teammates in 23 Chinese Super League fixtures. The player switched leagues to the CSL from Spanish side, Villarreal in a then record transfer for an African player early this year. The Congolese forward is predominantly deployed in the attacking midfield roles for his club where he is causing a lot of damage from the middle. The 27 year old is influencing the games in the Chinese Super League like the way how Lionel Messi bosses the Spanish La Liga with his freedom to roam all over the pitch finding pockets of spaces to exploit. The Asians are fortunate to have the forward in his prime after a number of clubs in Europe sought after his talents in January 2018 before he made the decision to follow in the footsteps of an African legend in Didier Drogba who also moved to China after his time in Europe.

Kenyan forward, Ayub Timbe makes up the list of the three best African players who took the Chinese Super League by storm this season. The centre-forward was recalled from loan by his parent club Beijing Renhe to help them extend their unbeaten run between July and August. Ayub Timbe scored 7 goals and provided 3 assists for his teammates as he helped his team to an 8th place finish in the league. The 26-year old deserves some credit for his heroics in the CSL considering the returns he has given his club which surpasses that of other forwards who played more than double the matches he played in. In Timbe, Kenya have another soccer player who is raising the Kenyan colours high alongside Victor Wanyama at Tottenham and Michael Olunga in the Japanese League.

Could Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi become one of the best full backs in the world?
For all of Dortmund’s recent successes in the Bundesliga, a portion must be attributed to Hakimi . Apart from winning the Bundesliga Rookie of The Month in September and serving up a hat-trick of assists in the Champions League, Achraf may just be getting started.

We only loan our valuables because both the lender and borrower cannot do without them. When they are not as valuable, we give them away forever. That is the same principle that has applied on the 20-year-old Achraf Hakimi who is currently on loan at the German Club, Borussia Dortmund from Real Madrid. Apparently Real Madrid already regret that. But why? Is it because he could most likely become one of the best full backs in the world?
The player caught the eyes of many when Spain faced Morocco in the World Cup. Interestingly, he was playing for his native homeland against the country that had given him a place to be born and grow up. Even though he pulled impressive stunts at left back position, he prefers to play on the right where he likes running up and down the flank with the opportunity to use his favorite right foot to swing in crosses or weed out the ball from the feet of the opponents. Such versatility is what distinguishes a player from others. His coach at Dortmund, Lucien Favre also alluded to the fact that he does a great job when playing forward too. He was quoted saying:
“He’s playing so well. He’s great going forward and he does a good job at the back. He played at left-back for Morocco, but prefers to play at right-back. He has so much potential.”
In his first three games with Borussia Dortmund, he rocked up two assists and one goal. He also won the Bundesliga Rookie of the month of September which places him right on track for winning the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the season. Even though he has not scored in the UEFA Champions League, his unquestionable dribbling and crossing abilities have graced him with three assists.
The young star also has quite a teachable spirit. He says he is ready to play as an attacker, but since he is with a coach who prefers a team with a strong defense, he will do just that. In an interview, he was quoted saying, “He's a coach who likes his teams to defend well and that's what he's asking me to do. In attack I'm ready, but the coach wants me to improve tactically and defensively and I think I'm getting it.”

This is a multi-faceted player who is not, however, willing to use the field to flex talent but to ensure that he grows. It is these tiny things that ensure that a player is not just good, but continuously becomes greater. He also stated that the reason why he agreed to the loan was because of their willingness to help young players grow and help them become better. A great full-back who is persistently after growth!
2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Full Preview of Bafana - Super Eagles tie
We couldn’t resist previewing the South Africa-Nigeria clash where winner takes all and a loser endangers their qualification hopes. Who will draw closest to the 2019 AFCON finals? Are you also aware of the highly rated and performing attacking talent on show in this one?

We are getting to the pinnacle of the AFCON qualifiers and there is still a possibility of seeing your national team being knocked out. Down south, it's a big one: South Africa’s Bafana Bafana take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The two sides are battling it out for the top spot and this game might well be considered a six-pointer as a win for either side will clinch their qualification for Cameroon 2019. Last November, Bafana Bafana broke their duck against Nigeria when they beat the Super Eagles 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau during the team’s first match of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers. It is therefore a game of nothing but revenge from the Super Eagles’ point of view.

That said, both sides have massive talent that can take the game by its horn. On one end Bafana Bafana boast an enterprising attacking talent from the likes of the evergreen Percy Tau, the magnificent Lebo Mothiba who’s been grabbing headlines in France, and also the ever-reliable Itumeleng Khune manning the poles at the back. However, the Nigerian are not to be outdone as they boast amazing talent as well, with the likes of Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho, although they might feel the setback of the absence of one of their reliable servants, Odion Ighalo who is ruled out with injury.
Most fans will be on the lookout for the crispy partnership between Tau and Mothiba of which many South African supporters will be hoping is on fire on the day in order to cause havoc for the Nigerian defense. Additionally, the return of South Africa’s prodigal son Thulani Serero, who's been given a lifeline by coach Stuart Baxter, might also be a talking point in this game. The danger of Mothiba cannot be easily ignored as the 22-year-old Strasbourg centre-forward has already bagged three goals in his first four caps for Bafana Bafana, quite a start.

From a defensive standpoint, it might be a busy day for Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune especially considering the incentive that have been put on the table for the Super Eagles. To give you context, the Nigerian players have been given a R360,000 incentive for every goal they score against Bafana Bafana. Such an incentive might well set the tone and fire up the Super Eagles to attack Bafana with all they have. If you ask me, this might turn out to be a cracker of a game. We’ve seen in recent times that fixtures pitting these two teams are never goal-shy and this one appears to be no exception.

Will Ivory Coast’s Jean Seri be enough for Fulham?
Ivorian, Seri is yet to hit his OGC Nice form in the Premier League. Fulham currently sit bottom of the EPL standings with a single win in 12 matches. How important will be the 27-year-old in Fulham and Claduio Ranieri’s turnaround strategy.

Sometimes when a ship sinks, it’s not all the mighty men that are called out for help, but rather many call upon the name of the captain. Fulham is finding itself in a similar position where relegation is looming closer than any possible win. With that threat slowly becoming a reality, players and fans have looked around and cast their eyes on Jean Michel Seri. Will the Ivorian be enough to stop what might befall the Cottagers or will he possibly go down together with the London ‘ship’.
Looming Danger

Fulham were recently promoted to the English Premier League after waiting for a while. In the 2015/2016 season, they finished 20th in the EFL Championship and were saved from relegation by 11 points. In typical water into wine staff, they got the “We are finally Premier League” card in June of this year. Even though they are stars in the current LilyWhites setup acquired for over £120 million in the summer, things are not looking good for the West Londoners as they are rock-bottom on the Premier League standings with a single win in 12 matches.
Technical Ability
With his midfield boxing ability and agility, he looks exactly like what Fulham needs but has had since the beginning of the season. His former coach, Slavisa Jokanovic, who just got axed was quoted saying, “Fulham does not have players like that, so he has come as the right answer.” The talented midfielder is physically fit in a way that is worthy of the Premier League which is arguably the most demanding league in Europe. He knows how to snatch the ball from the opponent while possessing the ability to shoot from distance. Above that, he is quite acquainted with the 3-5-2 or 4-2-3 formations that demand very gifted midfielders like himself. With what he has to offer, is it enough for him to help his team survive the chop? It is argued that if a player has the ability to play in the formation that most teams in the league play, then victory is not something that is far off. It is also a bit too early in the league to draw conclusions about relegation in the league as we are only 12 games into it. A lot can still change and Seri can still show up more for the Cottagers.
Bigger Challenge

The challenge is that the issue of relegation does not come as a result of one player and cannot be solved by individuals. Tim Sherwood, the former Tottenham manager cited the lack of quality of players in the squad as a reason for the relegation fears. He said the problem even goes beyond the way they play but it lies deeply with the caliber of players that they have bought. What that then means is that in spite of how good the 27-year-old Jean Serri can be, he cannot save his team from relegation. After all, he is just a midfielder, who takes up so much space of the field and cannot be a complete squad on his own. Furthermore, Fulham also spent over £120 million purchasing new players into the team. Having a lot of new players is coin toss as you have may people who are not accustomed to the style of play of the team. Being a great player is one thing, but being merged into the culture of a team is a game changer. With all the challenges that the team is facing, it becomes even more evident that the talent and dedication of the Ivorian midfielder may not enough to save the day.
The final word, though, is that the talks about relegation might be a bit premature at this point. A single game can change a team’s course. We will sit back and see if the highly rated Jean Michel Seri who previously attracted the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona before eventually switching to West London, will be enough to avert Fulham’s relegation. Additionally, the sacking of Slavisa Jokanovic and appointment of Claudio Ranieri who led Leicester City to a fairytale premier league title in the 2015/16 season could be an interesting plot twist for Fulham and Seri. Other African players such as Riyad Mahrez and Jeffrey Schlupp shined under Ranieri’s tenure at the Foxes. Seri and Fulham may be the latest beneficiaries of his abilities and experience, or not.

Thulani Serero’s Return to the Bafana Squad. Hit or Miss?
Netherlands based, Thulani Serero returns to the South African set up for the crucial 2019 AFCON clash against Nigeria on Saturday. After stirring the camp last time out, does he deserve another chance?
Context
Call it confidence or knowing your worth. Thulani Serero was quoted saying, “The sofa in Arnhem[city in Netherlands] is more comfortable than the South African bench”. This was when the player was making it quite clear that he would not avail himself for training unless he is guaranteed game time. Because of that stance, the South African Football Association (SAFA) then posed a ban on the player. However, Serero has had the ban lifted and is being recalled to the South African national team set up. Does this set good precedence for other players? Even before we decide on that, let us look on who exactly Thulani Serero is.

Thulani Serero is a midfielder who plays for Vitesse (a Dutch professional football team) and of course the same position for the South African national team. Prior to this, he was gracing the pitch with an Ajax Cape Town jersey in the South African Premier Soccer League. During the 2010-2011 season, he carried his team to the the finals of the Telkom Knockout tournament. In the same year, he was awarded PSL Footballer of the Year, PSL Player of the Season, PSL Players' Player of the Season and the ABSA Premiership Red Hot Young Player award. Sounds familiar right? Yes, Tau recently had some sort of similar accolades before moving to Brighton in the English Premier League.
Apology
Some South Africans believe that what the player did was disrespectful and he owes the nation an apology. They believe that the comments undermined the authority of the coach also proving Serero’s arrogance towards his teammates and the nation. Most importantly, further comments about his Bafana teammates aggravated the situation. For them to be told that they could only interact with the player at training, if they would only step aside and let him shine on the field of play suggests that he considered himself far more important than they are. How easy is it going to be for the Dutch based player to integrate into the team after he previously exalted himself to that extent? The move to have Thulani player back on the field in South African colors in the absence of a formal apology could be a definite miss.
Desperate times

Looking at the time at which the 28-year-old is being called up makes one realize that having him back might be the best move because a lot is at stake. The country is going into matchday 5 of the 6 qualifiers that determine who lands a finals spot at the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon. They are set to face the Super Eagles (Nigerian national team) in a top of the table group E clash. Looking at the track record of the Super Eagles who have have 9 points (1 point ahead of South Africa), Bafana Bafana cannot afford to hold back from having some of its superstars on the pitch due to a misunderstanding. For the sake of having the country participate in the AFCON, it is quite important for this move to be considered not as the best hit, but as a necessary hit. Talk about the end justifying the means.
Conclusion
We can never fully emphasise that soccer is really beyond the game itself, but about how it influences other aspects of life like our personality. One thing for sure that Thulani could have done was to demonstrate a bit of respect for his teammates and country, even when he was not afforded any game time. Being on the bench does not make anyone less of a player, but it can be considered as a time to learn.
