ABSA Premiership: Four horse title race goes down to the wire

Four unrelenting teams separated by only two points and with only seven matches remaining in the South African ABSA Premiership. Not many title races get much better than this.

The nation’s soccer lovers will need to fasten their seat belts and brace themselves for an emotional roller coaster. We are set for an exciting close of the season. In the top six‚ Pirates have 40 points from 23 games‚ Mamelodi Sundowns have 40 from 22‚ Cape Town City 39 from 23‚ Bidvest Wits 38 from 22.

Premier League football around the globe is hitting its penultimate moment characterized by competitiveness for the title. In South Africa’s ABSA premiership, it is no different. The Absa Premiership campaign is heading towards an exciting climax with several teams having a mathematical chance of winning the league title.

Going into Gameweek 23, Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates are currently top the table alongside rivals Mamelodi Sundowns as both sides sit on 40 points with seven and eight games to play respectively. Next is Cape Town City who are third with 39 points while Bidvest Wits’ recent form has seen them slip from top spot to fourth, on 38 points from 22 matches. Several of the Absa Premiership’s top sides still have to play each other over the course of what will be an exhilarating few weeks in the South African top-flight, with the Buccaneers and Brazilians set to battle it out in what could potentially be a title-deciding fixture at the end of April. Below we look at the run-in and assesses each team’s prospects of winning the coveted prize.

Orlando Pirates

One may be quick to think that the log leaders have it easy going into the last stretch of the remaining season. That is however not the case. Looking at their title run in, the Bucs still have to play all three of their title rivals in the next two months, starting with a matchup against Bidvest Wits, then a crunch fixture against Sundowns on May 5 before playing Cape Town City a week later. They face the toughest title run-in compared to the rest of the teams. Mind you, Pirates are still part of the CAF Champions league tournament as well, something that may hamper their domestic run-in. Juggling their Premiership assignments with continental duties still on their minds could be massively taxing. Perhaps the biggest motivation for Pirates is the pain of not having any silverware for the past five seasons, and as such, they may want to put a stop to that by going all the way. Do they have the capacity and depth to win it? I say yes.

Mamelodi Sundowns

Abafana Ba style, as they are fondly known, are now used to such circumstances, having won the league twice in the past three seasons. They certainly know what it takes to deliver at the most critical time. They are no doubt the favourites to land the title for various reasons. These include the fact that Sundowns have played a game less than Pirates, and if they were to win that game, it would give them a three-point cushion going into the remaining seven fixtures. Moreover, it is an open secret that Sundowns has the most depth compared to the rest of the teams in the league, and that on its own gives them options to rotate their squad in the coming busy period. However, the Brazilians also somewhat face a similar predicament as Orlando Pirates. They too are still competing in the CAF Champions League and that might disrupt their title charge. Either way, Pitso Mosimane’s side will be hoping they replicate their heroics where they won both the ABSA Premier League and the CAF Champions League in the same season. Looking at their remaining fixtures, Downs do not have it easy. Amongst others, they are still to face cross-town rivals SuperSport United before the potential title decider against Pirates in their penultimate match of the season.

Cape Town City FC

If anyone had ruled Cape Town City out of this season’s Absa Premiership title race, then their win against Mamelodi Sundowns last night would no doubt have changed their minds. Their 2-1 resounding victory over fellow title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns blew the race wide open. The Citizens came from a goal down to register a memorable 2-1 victory over the defending champions, thanks to brilliant goals from Kermit Erasmus and new signing Chris David. The victory came barely a week after Sundowns had beaten Cape Town City 3-2 in the reverse fixture.

It is no doubt that Coach Benni McCarthy used the January transfer window wisely, signing Kermit Erasmus and Thato Mokeke, two players who are already making a big impact in the side. Erasmus has bagged three goals in as many matches, while Mokeke is doing an immense job in midfield. New man Chris David, who was signed last week, showed the quality he possesses with a brilliant goal against Sundowns and much more will be expected from him in the final few months of the campaign.

Other than hosting Pirates in their penultimate league match of the season‚ City appear to have the best run-in of all the teams in the title race‚ at least on paper. Nonetheless, judging by the fluidity of the results this season‚ nothing is certain and there will be more twists in this race. Still, the scales seem to be tipped in City’s favour if one considers the fact that unlike title rivals Pirates and Sundowns‚ they (City) don’t have to worry about the Champions League. Nonetheless, City still have some tricky fixtures against the likes of Polokwane City and Bloemfontein Celtic that may prove daunting.

Bidvest Wits

Another team that is not to be ruled out of the title contention is Bidvest Wits, the 2017 champions, who sit on fourth place and just two points behind Pirates. Interestingly, Wits had been top of the league for a period dating back to the time before Christmas until the end of February when they were dethroned by Sundowns. Worse, Wits’ loss against Cape Town City also dented the club’s title hopes as it set them back two points adrift the log leaders and will therefore be banking on their remaining league games to have a shot to claim another title. That said, the Students as they are popularly known, will be banking on their remaining league games to have a go at the prospect of winning the league again. However, Wits also face a tough title run-in encompassed by tough fixtures including matches against Pirates and Supersport United.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has described the Absa Premiership title race as “crazy”, due to the inconsistency of clubs currently battling it out for the biggest prize in local football. Wits dropped points yet again over the weekend, squandering the two-goal lead they had at half-time to lose 3-2 to fellow title challengers Cape Town City at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.

Conclusion

Title run-ins surely don’t get any better than this. The nation's soccer lovers will need to fasten their seat belts and brace themselves for an emotional roller coaster. We are set for an exciting close of the season. In the top six‚ Pirates have 40 points from 23 games‚ Mamelodi Sundowns have 40 from 22‚ Cape Town City 39 from 23‚ Bidvest Wits 38 from 22. Which fixtures are you most looking forward to in the Absa Premiership title run-in?

Zambian Mwape Musonda making a point in the ABSA Premiership

He might be playing for none of the 2018/19 ABSA Premiership title contenders but Musonda is outscoring them all. After less impressive spells at Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows, the Zambian has found a new home at Lidoda Duvha. As their name suggests, the “day has really come” for Mwape.”

Black Leopards dangerous marksman Mwape Musonda has been banging in the goals for his team, showing the local strikers how it’s done.

The 28-year-old Zambian forward has so far scored 8 goals in 15 appearances for Lidoda Duvha, as Leopards is fondly known, putting him in pole position in the race for the Absa Premiership Golden Boot award. Musonda’s resurgence has however been hardly smooth. During his first season in South Africa, he joined Soweto giants Orlando Pirates midway through the 2014/15 season and his stint at the club was confined to only two appearances under then coach Eric Tinkler.

Musonda believes the dire situation he experienced during his short-lived stay with the Bucs is what ultimately forced him to move on from The Buccaneers, but is delighted with how things have since turned out. In his own words, the striker alludes that, “circumstances didn’t allow me to reach my potential at Pirates and obviously a lot was expected of me, coming in as a so-to-say ‘top striker’ from a foreign country,” he said.

Seeing that his move to the Buccaneers was not bearing fruit, Musonda went on loan to Golden Arrows where his bad spell continued. He then went back to Pirates who eventually let him go, allowing him to find a new home at Black Leopards.

Though banging in the goals, the former Zanaco forward concedes that there is huge room for improvement and thus he is not content with the goals he’s scored so far. One could argue that Leopards is not big a team as Pirates and perhaps that might work in favour for Musonda as the expectations are somewhat lower. Nonetheless, judging from his exploits thus far, it seems the Chipolopolo striker might well be on the brink of breaking the 15-goal duck that has remained unmatched by the league’s strikers for 7 seasons now. In fact, the last time a player scored more than 15 goals in the league was when legendary striker Siyabonga Nomvethe scored 19 premier league goals for Moroka Swallows. The lack of prolific strikers in the league is quite a concern on its own, considering how big a league the ABSA premiership is. One would expect the league to not only attract top strikers, but also produce amazing strikers from the different teams in the league. However that challenge seems not to be going away anytime soon. But that’s a story for another day.

Nonetheless, if Musonda’s exploits so far are anything to go by, he might as well be on his way of not only becoming the league’s top striker, but also breaking the long-standing 15 goal barrier. It is no surprise that his heroics have become noticed, as he was recently awarded the Player of The Month Award for December-January as his goal-scoring form helped his team rise up in the league standings. At present, Mwape Musonda looks ruthless in front of goal and if he keeps his excellent form he might as well edge closer to taking the top scorer prize home. Can he go all the way?

Black Leopards are currently 12th on the ABSA Premiership table and will need the Copper Bullets forward to stay on top of his game as they seek to move further up the table.

2019 CAF Champions League Match Day 2: Big wins and giant killings by some debutants

Africa’s premier club competition, the CAF Champions League is back with a bang. We have already witnessed upsets, dominant wins and off the pitch drama by fans only 2 fixtures into the competition. Worry not, we have laid down the Matchday 2 summary here for you.

In the CAF Champions League, there are big wins and even bigger wins, Orlando Pirates had the biggest win of matchday 2, taking down Horoya AC 3-0 in their second group stage encounter. The win levelled the Buccaneers with defending champions Esperance de Tunis at the top of Group B, as the latter also collected three points from their 2-0 win against Zimbabwean champions, FC Platinum.

After Friday’s performance, Pirates look in form for a title chase. Speaking in the aftermath of Friday’s win, head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic expressed his desire to take the title  this year, but he isn’t putting pressure on his players.

There is a dream to put a second star here, however,...when you put weight of pressure on your players, that moment legs are locked and they are not themselves and not enjoying the football.
— Milutin "Micho" Sredojevic, Orlando Pirates Coach

It certainly looks like his players are coping well with the pressure of Africa’s biggest stage and are obviously flying high enough for any challenge.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly were held to a 1-1 draw by JS Saoura away in Algeria on Friday while Club Africain registered another win away in Egypt, beating Ismaily 2-1. Namibian striker Benson Shilongo opened the scoring Ismaily with a powerful strike inside the Club Africain box. Two penalties against Ismaily changed the trajectory of the encounter in favour of the Tunisian side. The stadium descended into chaos after the second penalty which had been initially been flagged as a free kick for a foul just outside the box. CAF is currently deciding on the fate of Ismaily after their supporters disrupted play causing the match to be abandoned.

Congolese club AS Vita put out an impressive showing crushing their Tanzanian rivals, Simba Sports Club, 5-0. TP Mazembe however fell 3-0 to CS Constantine, which was nothing short of a surprise for the five-time champions. Despite the Mazembe goalie pulling off many saves in the first half, the Algerians’ persistence finally paid off in the 51st minute with a strike from Houcine Benayada. Debutants, CS Constantine have been a class act, securing 2 straight wins in 2 matches which leaves them at the top of Group C ahead of Club Africain and TP Mazembe.

Down South, Mamelodi Sundowns enjoyed a much better outcome for their efforts against Wydad Athletic Club. The 2-1 victory for the South Africans was crucial after a loss against Nigeria’s Lobi Stars in their first group stage encounter. Lobi Stars lost to ASEC Mimosas, with the Ivorians edging their West African counterparts, 1-0 in Abidjan.

Matchday 3 fixtures: CS Constantine taking on Ismaily and Orlando Pirates’ meeting with ES Tunis, are two fixtures that will probably have the most to look out for based on last weekend’s fixtures. FC Platinum will face off against Horoya, both teams in desperate need of a victory to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Mamelodi Sundowns will be hoping for another win when they face ASEC Mimosa on Friday as they search for an elusive second continental title.

Meet the latest addition to South African football’s hot list of in-form strikers. Amabhakabhaka’s one and only Vincent Maliele Pule.

Football is one profession that keeps new talent coming at a constant supply. In Europe, football fans are being amazed by the unreal displays of the wonderful Kylian Mbappe, and not forgetting the slow resurgence of the much loved Mo Salah. What’s poppin down south though? Well, South Africa might have found their own ‘young’ gem who is taking the ABSA premiership by storm. This is none other than the 26-year-old Orlando Pirates winger Vincent Pule, who has been a thorn in the flesh of many defenders this season, causing havoc with his immense pace and brilliant skills. Well, 26 is usually not considered young in comparison to the likes of Mbappe, but things have a different vibe in the South.

Vincent Pule has been the talk of the town at Orlando Pirates in the last few months, and it is not hard to see why.The ex Bidvest Wits winger has not only been at the forefront of Pirates’ recent impressive displays, but has also worked his way into the national setup courtesy of his outstanding displays at club level.

In the recent Soweto derby pitting Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, Pule put in a man of the match display, helping the Bucs to emerge victorious. He was a nightmare to Amakhosi defenders and had his moment of brilliance when he scored the winning goal to help Pirates claim all bragging rights and crucial three points at the expense of Chiefs.

(May 20, 2011 - Source: Gallo Images/Getty Images Europe)

But this is not the only game where Pule’s showing has been worth noting, he has been in sizzling form since the season started and midway through, he seems to possess all the attributes that may well earn him recognition of rookie of the season award come end of the season. Since arriving from Bidvest Wits in July, Pule has been an influential figure for the club, helping them to obtain positive results with crucial goals and assists. The left-footed former Bidvest Wits attacker who joined Pirates at the start of the season has netted four goals in 11 matches in all competitions this season and judging by current form, he doesn’t look like he’s gonna stop anytime soon.

With Pirates amongst the Premiership contenders, Pule’s role in that quest is central, and if his form is anything to go by, he might be the key man to lead Pirates to the title. It is no surprise that the fans seem to be loving him as they are enjoying his displays. The only question perhaps one can ask is can he be able to sustain his form throughout the season? If he can, then we might be looking at the next best talent to come out of Mzansi.

Derby Classics: Chiefs and Pirates gear up for Soweto Derby

Tickets are sold out, vuvuzelas have been polished, and the commentators are rehearsing their voices and adjectives. One of the most iconic derbies in world football, the Soweto derby, returns. The players are ready, are you?

With an avalanche of jaw-dropping fixtures on the cards as we wrap up the month of October, football fans are in for a treat. From the return of the EPL where Manchester United take on Chelsea, to the Milan derby in Italy, moving to the UEFA champions league clash pitting Juventus and Manchester United, what more can one ask for really? Our lovely African continent is not to be left as well as big games there are also on the cards. Well you better believe it, the famous Soweto derby is also in the mix, and you don’t wanna miss out on this one.

Tickets are sold out as always, the stadium will be colorful with  gold and black colours of the phefeni glamour boys, to the historic black and white resemblance of Amabhakajuju, its on! Add to that, the iconic vuvuzelas which have been very much central to South African football in particular, will be in abundance, bringing life to the stadium.

Kaizer Chiefs will be facing off against the mighty Buccaneers of Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby at the iconic Soweto City Stadium and there’s surely a lot to play for than just three points. It’s a derby after all! Both these teams are in the running for the ABSA premiership title which is slowly heating up. However, what I like most about derbies and not just this one but in general, is that context doesn’t matter. Now what do I mean by that? Well, from the past, we’ve seen that the previous performance of a team whether excellent or disastrous, doesn’t really matter in a derby as the players just get motivated intrinsically in a bid to impress during games of such calibre. The soweto derby is no different. Two of Mzansi’s (South Africa) biggest teams with rich history are going head to head and one can only imagine how the outcome of the game will be at the end of the day.

However, in recent times, the hype about the derby has been declining for a number of reasons. One of them is the decrease in competitiveness of both Amakhosi and Ambabhakaniya with regards to challenging for both the league and domestic cups. Chiefs last tasted silverware in the 2014/2015 season during Stuart Baxter’s reign while Pirates last won a cup while Eric Tinkler was at the helm also during the 2014/2015 season where they won the Nedbank cup. For teams like Chiefs and Pirates, that is quite a long time not to win anything more so because of the high expectations the football fraternity has on these teams. That said, in recent times, these teams have been outclassed by teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Supersport United in challenging for silverware.

Back to the derby, it's a big one.Tickets are sold out as always, the stadium will be colorful with  gold and black colours of the phefeni glamour boys, to the historic black and white resemblance of Amabhakajuju, its on! Add to that, the iconic vuvuzelas which have been very much central to South African football in particular, will be in abundance, bringing life to the stadium. What else could one ask for really? With a set of new coaches on either side, as well as a lot of fresh players from both clubs, it is difficult to predict who might emerge victorious. The 26th of October is around the corner and we shall soon find out. The stage is set, expect tears, rifts, happiness, trolls and the works. It’s a derby after all! A massive ninety thousand plus fans will convene to watch it live. The soweto derby is not for the faint-hearted, emotions will be all over the place but the ultimate winner in all of this will be football. May the best team win. Where will you be watching the derby from? Who are you vouching for, Amakhosi or Bhakaniya?

Don't Miss Out On These Incredible African Leagues!

The South African Absa Premiership, Etisalat Egypt Premier League, Glo Ghanaian Premier League and the Nigerian Professional Football League are among Africa’s best domestic leagues and have been reliable feeders of global talent over the years. Get indepth information on what they’re like.

We still ask, do you perhaps wish there were more football stories, controversies and goals to enjoy other than those provided by the English Premier League, La Liga, Italian Serie A, UEFA Champions League, World Cup, Bundesliga and many more? We have a list for you, definitely far from being exhaustive, but one with leagues you would not want to miss.

Absa Premier League (South Africa)

This league proves that the number of years that a league has seen is not anything, if the league has the financial support behind it. True to the fact of its location, in one of Africa’s biggest economic hub, it is valued as the second most valuable league in Africa. In 2007, ABSA sponsored the league with an admirable USD $61 million dollars for five years. Any league that has $12.3M to spend per year is definitely marked for long term sustainability and of course, a position at the top. Above that, the league set itself up on a record deal partnership, the biggest on the continent so far with Supersport that guaranteed windfall of cash. Armed with great teams like Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, this league has 16 teams and 624 players in its belt. Notably, the league has about 17% of its players coming from foreign countries which is the highest rate amongst all African leagues. Here is the uniting characteristic of diversity in soccer at play! Here are even more reasons why you should watch it.

More than anything, this league is armored with the financial capacity that surpasses all other leagues in the continent. It is valued at €105.65 million and has 18 teams fully participating in it. Just to give a sense of scale of how much it is worth, if all the money that the league is worth were to be spent, it is enough to purchase 400K of Nike soccer boots worth $300  each. It has become the envy of players from across the continent. No wonder Legends like El Hadary were reluctant to leave their country to play European football. This league is sponsored by the telecommunication dominant player Etisalat and ofcourse hosts a myriad of clubs that have become powerhouses of football on the continent. In fact the two most successful clubs in the history of the CAF Champions League, Al Ahly and Zamalek, are domiciled in the Egypt Premier League. These clubs have also been notable for hosting a great deal of Egyptian talent that ends up finding its way in the most known European football leagues.

Glo Ghanaian Premier League

This league was engulfed by lack of popularity until Globacom, a telecommunication company came with a $23 million sponsorship for five years. In 2009, the Optimum Media Prime signed a viewership deal of USD $90 000. It was ranked as the 11th best league in Africa by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics from 2001-2010. We have the country especially the league to thank for producing stars that have gone on to earn legendary status in African football such as  Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan and Kwadwo Asamoah.

The Nigerian Professional Football League

WIth vasts of the global talent today being Nigerian and the country itself being a host to close to 200 million Africans, its inevitable not to have a lot to talk about from their football league and it sure would be surreal for it not to have a place among the best. The Nigerian Football Federation itself, has encountered a lot of storms over the years that saw the top flight league change names countless times to reinforce the brand identity. In 2012, the NPFL was named the best league in Africa and ranked 24th in the world, above the Scottish Premier League. Since being incorporated by the League Management Company in 2012, signs of upgrade of facilities have been evident. Partnerships with organizers of the La Liga, Liga de Futbol Profesional and the Premier League body of Morocco have since been reached ushering an era of continuous integration into the global football leagues.  The NPFL All Stars (made up of the league’s best players) have since been playing pre-season friendlies with Spanish giants such as Atletico Madrid, Malaga and Valencia to expose the talent as well as improve the fabric of the league.

What is your favorite league? What do you like most about it?

Just to give a sense of scale of how much it is worth, if all the money that the league is worth were to be spent, it is enough to purchase 400K of Nike soccer boots worth $300  each. It has become the envy of players from across the continent. No wonder Legends like El Hadary were reluctant to leave their country to play European football.

Three reasons why you should watch the South African League

Many times we soccer enthusiasts particularly rate European leagues highly because of the exciting and competitive nature of the game in those leagues. These include the English Premier League which is the most watched football league in the world, followed by the Spanish La Liga. But, what about the leagues in Africa? Is there really not something to look forward to in African Soccer Leagues? Certainly not. In this article we take a closer look at the South African Premier League, commonly known as the Absa Premiership and we provide some insights as to why you should highly consider taking some time and watch South African football.

1. It is the home of the famous “Vuvuzela”

African football is mostly known for the strong passion from football supporters who sing their favourite songs about their teams while also chanting songs about their favourite players. In South Africa, the fans do the most. They go above and beyond just singing songs but they add some flavour by blowing their vuvuzelas which most believe helps cheer the players on the pitch. The vuvuzela took centre stage during the memorable FIFA world cup which was held in South Africa back in 2010. The world was introduced to the vuvuzela and most liked the sound it makes when blown. That said, the ABSA premier league provides an endless opportunity for fans wishing to experience and witness how the vuvuzela is blown.

the Absa premiership has become popular for the showboating exploits demonstrated by some of the players. The famous shibobos and crazy dribbling all add up to the things that make this league appreciated and exciting to watch.

2. It is one of the most valuable and richest leagues in Africa

Yep it is. With a prize money of 10 million rands (USD 672 000), coupled with cup competitions (MTN 8, Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout) that make up a total prize money of close to 20 million rands up for grabs. This league certainly warrants the attention of true football lovers. Because of its value, the Absa Premier League has caught and attracted the attention of some famous footballers and in turn improved the quality of the league over time. Such players include Zimbabwe’s Benjani Mwaruwari who used to play for Jomo Cosmos before moving to the EPL in Portsmouth colors and eventually Manchester City not forgetting Knowledge Musona widely known as the “Smiling Assassin” who used to play for Kaizer Chiefs and now plies his trade in the Belgian First Division A for the most successful club in that league, Anderlecht. The legendary Roger Feutmba who used to don the jersey of Bafana Ba Style in Mamelodi Sundowns and scoring goals as a hobby. In present times, the league has produced quality players such as the South African internationals Itumeleng Khune, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Percy Tau, just to name a few, all who have become household names.

3. It is home to one of the biggest derbies in the world

Lest we forget, the Absa premiership also hosts two of the best teams in South Africa which happen to be arch rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. These two emanate from the same famous South African township, Soweto in Johannesburg. As such, twice a season, both Chiefs and Pirates lock horns in the infamous “Soweto derby” which is watched by more than 90 000 fans at the biggest stadium in South Africa, FNB Stadium. Moreover, the Soweto derby is watched by millions of other football lovers and usually the country comes to a standstill when it is derby time because of the rich and intense rivalry between both sets of the teams’ fans. Personally I have experienced watching the derby countless times and trust me it becomes more than just a game, the passion is real!

Apart from the above reasons, the Absa premiership has become popular for the showboating exploits demonstrated by some of the players. The famous shibobos and crazy dribbling all add up to the things that make this league appreciated and exciting to watch for fans that follow it. With all said and said, don’t you think it's time to widen your viewing appetite and watch the ABSA premier league? I certainly think so.

PSL South Africa: Pirates coach reveals focus as title chances fade away

"We are only thinking about the next match. We’ve no right to talk about anything else."

orlando pirates celebrate a goal against the mamelodi sundowns in the PSL

The Sea Robbers boss, Milutin Sredojevic has revealed that the club has met their 2017/18 season goals adding that their priority is now securing CAF Champions League automatic qualification. Orlando Pirates continued their unbeaten run by beating AmaZulu 2-1 on Sunday, reducing the gap between themselves and table-topping Sundowns to just 3 points who happen to have a game in hand. With three matches left for Pirates and Sundowns needing just 6 points from possible 12 to win the PSL title, it is almost game over for Pirates. Next up, the Buccaneers face the challenge of Bidvest Wits who are the latest victims of Bafana BaStyle’s predatory season. Mamelodi Sundowns capitalized on Wits’ mistake over the weekend to claim a comfortable 2-0 victory with Sibusiso Vilakazi and Themba Zwane getting on the scoresheet while Percy Tau was at the center of the slick build ups that led to the goals.

Amabhakabhaka are seven points ahead of third and fourth-placed Maritzburg United and fellow Sowetonians, Kaizer Chiefs. A win against the Clever Boys will secure second place and ensure they feature in next year’s continental showpiece, the CAF Champions League.

We shall see. We are only thinking about the next match. We’ve no right to talk about anything else. So this is the target we are looking to achieve and stability in building the team to make supporters happy by playing good football. Next match is for the CAF Champions League.

PSL South Africa: ‘Love letter’ on the pitch as Sundowns edge closer to title

Mamelodi Sundowns zero in on the PSL Title

Mamelodi Sundowns edge closer to winning ABSA PSL in South Africa

Mamelodi Sundowns are close to winning their 3rd PSL title in five years after coming from behind to beat Baroka FC by 2-1 on Sunday. After a slow start which saw former Masandawana man, Lucky Nguzana open the scoring, Sundowns center back, Wayne Arendse equalized at the stroke of half-time after he was left unmarked at the far post. A more comfortable second-half performance saw Sibusiso Vilakazi and PSL player of the year favorite, Percy Tau combine flowery passes with the latter, tucking away the ball into the back of the net for Masandawana’s second goal of the day. Tau is now tied with Rodney Ramagelela on the top scoring charts, both sitting on 11 for the season.

However, as you would expect from the Absa PSL, something else stole the headlines for the match. A note from the Sundowns coaching staff with player instructions in the 72nd minute seemed to circulate among three other players before eventually finding its way to the skipper, Denis Onyango who terminated the transition by chewing the note. Only them know what was written in that letter. I wonder who was sending love, or could it be the Brazilians’ winning formula who are now 13 unbeaten in the league.

The Sundowns gaffer, Pitso Mosimane is not leaving anything to chance in the title race as he borrowed a leaf from Sir Alex Ferguson as he described this stage of the campaign as a “squeaky bum time,” nerves begin to jangle.

Sundowns’ closest rival to the title is Orlando Pirates who play a tricky Super Sport United on Wednesday.

Absa PSL Awards: The “March Criminals” are all from Orlando

Orlando dominates March's ABSA PSL Awards

Orlando Pirates dominate the ABSA PSL awards for March

The South African Premier Soccer League awards for the month of March have been decided and the boys in black and white are looking good. The former Ugandan national team coach who now calls the Orlando part of Soweto, home, walked away with the manager of the season award for the second time this season. Coach Micho has revitalized Orlando Pirates’ goalscoring form in a “water into wine” fashion after a slow start to the 2017/18 campaign. The Buccaneers have now scored five times and registered two wins out two in the month of March. His team. Pirates have won their last five PSL matches and currently occupy the second spot on the log, a point behind Mamelodi Sundowns, though they have played one more game.

Coach Micho’s boys are not only following his instructions on the pitch but also to the podium. The 30-year-old Musa Nyatama won the player of the month award, recognized for his Kevin De Bruyne-esque performances, playing defense-splitting passes, giving assists and nonchalance defending. The guys command the midfield like no man or woman’s business. His Zambian teammate, Justin Shonga grabbed the goal of the month award for his stoppage time thunderbolt against Chippa United. Shonga’s goal will be in contention to win the Absal-lutely goal with the season together with the best goals of other months.

The player and coach of the month awards were decided by a panel of judges made up of the broadcast media and football analysts while the goal was voted for by the fans.

Who do you think will win the 2017/18 South African Premier Soccer League title?

Orlando Pirates vs Sundowns South Africa PL

We are spoiled with appetizing Absa premiership matches on the night of the 4th of April. Mamelodi looking to extend their unbeaten run, Orlando Pirates seeking to extend their winning streak and both sides running towards claiming the ultimate prize, PSL league title. Sundowns (Masandawana) return to league action since the second of the match and will be looking to add more breathing space at the top of the standing when they face the challenge of the Chilli boys (Chippa United) whom they have never lost to in 9 league matches, since the 2012/13 season. Masandawana are currently a point above the Buccaneers (Orlando Pirates) with a game in hand advantage. Chippa are currently 11 on the table and most people would fancy Masandawana to get the three points

Amabhakabhaka are tackling Bloemfontein Celtic, who they beat 1-0 in their last time out at Celtic. Pirates will be keen to keep the pressure on the Sundowns especially now that only five games remain in the season. They will be feeling pretty confident, having won seven of their last nine games. The most recent win being a 3-1 victory against their bitter rivals, Kaizer Chiefs. However, Punye Sele Sele can prove to be a stubborn team on their day, having frustrated Chiefs to a 0-0 draw in their last match. They currently occupy the ninth spot on the league table.
