Are Masandawana and Orlando Pirates a class above the rest?

Preseason is over, signings have been made, teams have been strengthened, and the time has come once again for teams to leave it all out on the field. In short, the ABSA Premiership is finally here! Africa’s most exciting league has returned to full force, and saw some exciting matches kicking off the new campaign. Being a new season, a lot of teams have reinforced their squads in a bid to become competitive in the new season. Unsurprisingly, a couple of teams have already been earmarked as prospective title challengers. These include defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, closely followed by Orlando Pirates. In what is a similar story to that which unfolded in the English Premier League last season between Manchester City and Liverpool. Pirates will be looking to avenge last season’s misfortunes and salvage some silverware for the mighty Buccaneers faithful. Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their 2019/20 campaign with a convincing victory over cross-town rivals SuperSport United. While Pirates are looking quite good, defending PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns will again be the team to chase, while Bidvest Wits, Chiefs, SuperSport United and Cape Town City will be in the mix as well.

Mamelodi Sundowns

Title favourites. They have easily become the “Manchester City” of Mzansi. They have it all, the money to buy any player they want, a seasoned coach in Pitso Mosimane, and boast of experience on the biggest football stages. Those reasons are enough to warrant Masandawana as title favourites even in the new season. Sundowns have the strongest team in the league in terms of depth. Further to this, the team have experienced players in the likes of Hlompho Kekana and Dennis Onyango who have experienced CAF Champions League glory and it is such attributes that sets the team apart from the rest. Do not be surprised come end of season if you should hear that they have won the league for the third consecutive time.

Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs are desperate to make up for a disappointing ninth place finish last term, add the fact that the club is celebrating their 50th anniversary. They have signed five players, but they released about ten, so they may lack the numbers and the depth needed to successfully challenge for the league. Worth noting is the absence of club captain Itumeleng Khune, whose presence and leadership has been sorely missed on the pitch as fans have witnessed a number of goalkeeping howlers during his time on the sidelines. Unsurprisingly, it seems a majority of the club’s fans are also not entirely convinced that coach Ernst Middendorp is the right man to lead the mighty Amakhosi. It therefore comes as no surprise that the club has been heavily linked with the possibility of acquiring the services of former coach Stuart Baxter who recently resigned from his Bafana Bafana job. Since Baxter left the team, it’s fair to say Amakhosi seemed to lose their playing style and since then, have struggled to adopt a new and clear way of playing.

In terms of strengthening the side, Chiefs have been one of the active teams in the transfer market, look to have been squeezed out of the local market and so are banking on four untested foreigners to turn around their fortunes. But whether Lazarous Kambole (Zambia)‚ James Kotei (Ghana)‚ Samir Nurkovic (Serbia) or Kearyn Baccus (South African-born Australian) are the panacea to four trophyless seasons of bitter disappointment remains to be seen. Khama Billiat is also a question mark‚ being heavily linked with a move away from the club; potentially back to Sundowns, a move that may surely weaken the glamour boys’ attacking prowess should it materialize. Though fan support at stadiums has dropped, the pedigree that Chiefs have is second to none, therefore they cannot be overlooked for one bit. Even in the new season the club will remain favorites though realistically, Amakhosi might have to wait a bit longer before they can “reclaim the glory”.

Pirates

Orlando Pirates have finished runners-up in the last two seasons and blew the title race in 2018-19 when it was theirs for the taking. Having finished runners-up in the last two seasons, the Buccaneers are determined to go one better. With Coach Micho Sredojevic’s mandate very clear, the squad has been considerably strengthened ahead of what will be an intriguing campaign indeed.

Pirates have made a host of changes in the off-season‚ looking to intensify the pressure on rivals Sundowns in order to come out tops at the end of the season. Coach “Micho” will be looking to finally earn his first silverware for the Bucs since joining the club two seasons back. Pirates certainly look to be the biggest threat to Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance. From face value, Pirates have bought well‚ though there are also quite a few “squad fillers” in there who are unlikely to push for a first team place.

From the past and current season, Pirates have been playing with great structure and a burst of speed up-front with the likes of Vincent Pule‚ Thembinkosi Lorch and Justin Shonga able to run at defences on the wings. Add Mhango to that list now, it’s total danger. What is more, the midfield combination of Musa Nyatama and Ben Motshwari will be expected to play a commanding role at the belly of the park and the addition of Siphesihle Ndlovu and Fortune Makaringe is expected to create a healthy competition at the belly of the park for the mighty Buccaneers. Much is expected from Pirates this season and they certainly have the ammunition to march towards the title come May 2020.

The “Title Pretenders,” Wits and Cape Town City

Benni McCarthy's charges in Cape Town City probably didn't believe enough that they had a real fighting chance last season, but the one thing they have - that many PSL teams lack - is their fighting spirit. When they are a goal or two down, they don't simply throw in the towel. What they needed was to further bolster their squad and the acquisition of Aboubaker Mobara, Bernio Verhagen and Tashreeq Morris will make them even more difficult to beat.

On the other hand, Bidvest Wits boasting a coach that has won four league titles in Gavin Hunt, always makes the Clever Boys one amongst the favorites. Having international stars such as Namibian winger Deon Hotto and the Bafana Bafana trio of Thulani Hlatshwayo, Buhle Mkhwanazi and Sifiso Hlanti, also puts Wits in the title conversation. The quartet will be eager to bring what they learned at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt to the university side.

 There has been a change of leadership over the last two years at Wits following the departure of the company’s founder and billionaire Brian Joffe. Budgets have been slashed after Joffe's departure as the new bosses do not possess the same deep pockets for the club that the billionaire had. Players like Daylon Claasen‚ Edwin Gyimah‚ Darren Keet‚ Vuyo Mere‚ Bantu Mzwakali and Denis Weidlich were released but Wits have made some promising signings as they look to again challenge for the title. Brandon Petersen will start in goal ahead of Ricardo Goss while Phathutshedzo Nange from Black Leopards‚ has the potential to become an influential midfielder.

Conclusion

All in all, ready to build on the promising previous season and go one better, Pirates look like serious title contenders. For all we know, they are the main side that can push Sundowns all the way. One may argue that perhaps it’s too soon to judge them; nonetheless they look like the real deal. On the other hand, Chiefs will be looking to restore their pride and tarnished reputation by winning some silverware. Cape Town City will be looking to break into the top three and finally, Wits will continue to lurk behind with the hope of pouncing when unexpected, like they did three seasons ago. We’re in for a lot of shocks and drama yet again.

Where are we now?

One would argue that a league whereby it takes the final day of the season to decide the league champions speaks of the high level of competitiveness in that league. Such is the case with the South African Absa Premier League. The 2018/2019 Absa Premiership season has been nothing short of excitement and thrills. With 29 games played and one game remaining, it is still unclear who will walk away as the champions of the 2018/2019 season. Similar to the English Premier League where Liverpool and Manchester City are battling it out for the title, it is still unclear on who will win the Absa premiership title between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

 League leaders Orlando Pirates' Absa Premiership title run was dealt a major blow when they drew 2-2 with Cape Town City on match-day 29 of the season, failing to take full advantage of Mamelodi Sundowns' commitments in the CAF Champions League. The result moved the Buccaneers only a point ahead of second placed Sundowns who have a game in hand over their title rivals, heading into the final week of the 2018-19 season. As things stand, Pirates are on 54 points from 29 league matches, and while they will have to win their final game of the season to stand any realistic chance of winning the title, Sundowns could possibly spoil the party knowing that winning both their remaining two games will see them retain the title.

 For Bafana BaStyle, the league title is now a priority particularly after bowing out of the CAF Champions League at the hands of a 2-1 aggregate loss to Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals. Taking this into consideration, Sundowns know that they will have to salvage their season by doing all they can to defend their PSL crown.

 Just like the two English Premier League giants

Similar to Liverpool, Pirates boast of a rich winning history, however, the club has not won the league since the 2011/2012 season. As such, winning the league title would bring back the glory days at Amabhakabhaka and should be a confidence booster for the club. On the other hand, Sundowns’ recent exit from the CAF champions league means the Absa premiership title is the team’s last shot at any hopes of salvaging some silverware this season. Thus, Masandawana would want to defend the title that they have won three times in the last five seasons. Sundowns arguably have the best squad and the best coach in South Africa if not across all the continent just like Man City, and their financial muscles have contributed immensely in ensuring that they challenge for trophies on all fronts.

 Much like Manchester City, Sundowns’ season has been playing catch up to Pirates for the better part of the season due to commitments in the CAF Champions League. Playing in Africa, comprising of long distance travels for the club has evidently slowed down Sundowns’ momentum in the league. However, being a team filled with depth and comprising of quality players, the Brazilians have been able to grind out results in the toughest of situations, enough to keep them in the title race. Now, with the loss to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League semi-final signalling the end of their hopes for a second star, Masandawana have shifted focus back to the domestic league title where they stand a good chance of grabbing some elusive silverware.

The top in-form players

With Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic’s troops chasing their first PSL title in seven years, a number of players have been instrumental in the Bucs’ impressive season. One of the players at the heart of the Buccaneers’ title surge has arguably been Thembinkhosi Lorch. The 25-year old has dished out a series of stellar performances in the 2018/2019 season. To his reward, Lorch has managed to bag six goals and five assists in the league. Worth noting, Lorch’s 11 goal contributions account for over a quarter of Pirates' 39 goals this season showing how instrumental he has been for the ‘Sea Robbers’. Apart from Lorch, the likes of Xola Mlambo and Vincent Pule have also chipped in with big performances for the Sea Robbers during the course of the season.

 On the other hand, players like Hlompho Kekana and Lebohang Maboe have been equally crucial for Mamelodi Sundowns, considering the large amount of games the team has had to play due to their participation in the CAF Champions league. Hlompho Kekana has been a model of consistency this campaign for Sundowns. He has remarkably missed just one league game‚ and the only time he came off the bench to play was in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 defeat to Chippa United. Kekana has started 27 league games‚ three in the domestic cups and 17 in the Champions League‚ a measure of his incredible stamina and ability to stay injury-free. As the team’s captain, Kekana’s leadership at the centre of the field have helped Sundowns grind out results even when playing a “less exciting” brand of football, something that Jose Mourinho would attribute as a champions’ mentality. Similarly, Lebohang Maboe has been lethal in front of goal for Bafana Ba Style and it is without a surprise that he is the club’s top goal scorer with eight league goals and six assists in 25 matches.

Final thoughts

With the Absa Premiership title race going down to the wire Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits all have a chance to finish as champions. It is safe to say that the league is now Sundowns’ to lose particularly after Pirates’ draw with Cape Town City in their penultimate game of the season. The Soweto giants are on 54 points, just one ahead of Sundowns who take on the challenge of Khompela’s Lamontville Golden Arrows before facing Free State Stars in the final game of the season. Johannesburg based side Bidvest Wits have an outside chance as they sit in third place with 51 points, but it’s all really down to Downs and Pirates who battle with Polokwane City in what promises to be a photo finish of this season’s Absa premiership.

 Looking at the remaining games for both sides, it would appear that on paper, Sundowns have an easier run-in to the end of the season, as they are left with fixtures against sides from the bottom half of the table in Golden Arrows and Free State Stars. On the other hand, the remaining games are less friendly for Pirates as they face teams fighting for top 8, closing the season with a tricky encounter against Polokwane City. Bidvest Wits, who became champions for the first time only two seasons ago, have a mathematical chance of topping the final table on goal difference. Wits currently sit third in the league table with 51 points, three behind Pirates. This season will surely go down as one of the memorable seasons due to its competitiveness.

Premier League football around the globe is hitting its penultimate moment characterized by competitiveness for the title. In South Africa’s ABSA premiership, it is no different. The Absa Premiership campaign is heading towards an exciting climax with several teams having a mathematical chance of winning the league title.

Going into Gameweek 23, Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates are currently top the table alongside rivals Mamelodi Sundowns as both sides sit on 40 points with seven and eight games to play respectively. Next is Cape Town City who are third with 39 points while Bidvest Wits’ recent form has seen them slip from top spot to fourth, on 38 points from 22 matches. Several of the Absa Premiership’s top sides still have to play each other over the course of what will be an exhilarating few weeks in the South African top-flight, with the Buccaneers and Brazilians set to battle it out in what could potentially be a title-deciding fixture at the end of April. Below we look at the run-in and assesses each team’s prospects of winning the coveted prize.

Orlando Pirates

One may be quick to think that the log leaders have it easy going into the last stretch of the remaining season. That is however not the case. Looking at their title run in, the Bucs still have to play all three of their title rivals in the next two months, starting with a matchup against Bidvest Wits, then a crunch fixture against Sundowns on May 5 before playing Cape Town City a week later. They face the toughest title run-in compared to the rest of the teams. Mind you, Pirates are still part of the CAF Champions league tournament as well, something that may hamper their domestic run-in. Juggling their Premiership assignments with continental duties still on their minds could be massively taxing. Perhaps the biggest motivation for Pirates is the pain of not having any silverware for the past five seasons, and as such, they may want to put a stop to that by going all the way. Do they have the capacity and depth to win it? I say yes.

Mamelodi Sundowns

Abafana Ba style, as they are fondly known, are now used to such circumstances, having won the league twice in the past three seasons. They certainly know what it takes to deliver at the most critical time. They are no doubt the favourites to land the title for various reasons. These include the fact that Sundowns have played a game less than Pirates, and if they were to win that game, it would give them a three-point cushion going into the remaining seven fixtures. Moreover, it is an open secret that Sundowns has the most depth compared to the rest of the teams in the league, and that on its own gives them options to rotate their squad in the coming busy period. However, the Brazilians also somewhat face a similar predicament as Orlando Pirates. They too are still competing in the CAF Champions League and that might disrupt their title charge. Either way, Pitso Mosimane’s side will be hoping they replicate their heroics where they won both the ABSA Premier League and the CAF Champions League in the same season. Looking at their remaining fixtures, Downs do not have it easy. Amongst others, they are still to face cross-town rivals SuperSport United before the potential title decider against Pirates in their penultimate match of the season.

Cape Town City FC

If anyone had ruled Cape Town City out of this season’s Absa Premiership title race, then their win against Mamelodi Sundowns last night would no doubt have changed their minds. Their 2-1 resounding victory over fellow title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns blew the race wide open. The Citizens came from a goal down to register a memorable 2-1 victory over the defending champions, thanks to brilliant goals from Kermit Erasmus and new signing Chris David. The victory came barely a week after Sundowns had beaten Cape Town City 3-2 in the reverse fixture.

It is no doubt that Coach Benni McCarthy used the January transfer window wisely, signing Kermit Erasmus and Thato Mokeke, two players who are already making a big impact in the side. Erasmus has bagged three goals in as many matches, while Mokeke is doing an immense job in midfield. New man Chris David, who was signed last week, showed the quality he possesses with a brilliant goal against Sundowns and much more will be expected from him in the final few months of the campaign.

Other than hosting Pirates in their penultimate league match of the season‚ City appear to have the best run-in of all the teams in the title race‚ at least on paper. Nonetheless, judging by the fluidity of the results this season‚ nothing is certain and there will be more twists in this race. Still, the scales seem to be tipped in City’s favour if one considers the fact that unlike title rivals Pirates and Sundowns‚ they (City) don’t have to worry about the Champions League. Nonetheless, City still have some tricky fixtures against the likes of Polokwane City and Bloemfontein Celtic that may prove daunting.

Bidvest Wits

Another team that is not to be ruled out of the title contention is Bidvest Wits, the 2017 champions, who sit on fourth place and just two points behind Pirates. Interestingly, Wits had been top of the league for a period dating back to the time before Christmas until the end of February when they were dethroned by Sundowns. Worse, Wits’ loss against Cape Town City also dented the club’s title hopes as it set them back two points adrift the log leaders and will therefore be banking on their remaining league games to have a shot to claim another title. That said, the Students as they are popularly known, will be banking on their remaining league games to have a go at the prospect of winning the league again. However, Wits also face a tough title run-in encompassed by tough fixtures including matches against Pirates and Supersport United.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has described the Absa Premiership title race as “crazy”, due to the inconsistency of clubs currently battling it out for the biggest prize in local football. Wits dropped points yet again over the weekend, squandering the two-goal lead they had at half-time to lose 3-2 to fellow title challengers Cape Town City at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.

Title run-ins surely don’t get any better than this. The nation's soccer lovers will need to fasten their seat belts and brace themselves for an emotional roller coaster. South Africa's Lerato Chabangu: A bittersweet story

Former Bafana Bafana player Lerato Chabangu feels that he can get back on to the football pitch and play professionally once more. The former SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United striker, who has also played for Bafana Bafana in his career, has recently been signed by Baberwa FC in the ABC Motsepe League. Chabangu penned down a six-month deal with the side and is hoping he can revive his career.

Chabangu’s resurgence comes after a long spell off the field that was characterized by a plethora of struggles the player went through. These included excessive indulgence in alcohol, as well as uncontrollable reckless financial spending. Speaking in an interview in late 2018, Chabangu confessed saying, “I do feel like I’m depressed. I comfort myself by watching TV. I disappointed lots of people. I was found in a wrong space, most of my friends were living in the township. I could say that I have destroyed myself, I can’t really blame others. If you are at the wrong space, the negative things will catch you.”

But perhaps what is more interesting is how Chabangu rose to stardom and made him one of the greatest players South Africa has ever seen. At some point he was even linked with heavy interest from European teams. However, lack of financial discipline and professional discipline proved to be a setback in Chabangu’s once glamourous career. Then he hit rock bottom. The stories that broke thereafter were rather sad considering the immense talent this player possesses. Chabangu conceded that reckless spending and lack of financial discipline got him into many problems such as booze and spending money on women.

The paradoxical nature of Chabangu’s touching story sheds some life lessons that particularly football players can all adopt or be mindful of. On one hand it is the perfect epitome of the serious challenges faced by players with regards to various aspects such as financial education. Often times than not, teams only pay salaries to their players and distance themselves from what happens to the players when they reach retirement. This means that the onus is on the players to take charge of their finances after retirement, but, especially from an African context, one finds that footballers lack knowledge and expertise on how best they can get the most of their money whilst they are still playing.

Stories like Chabangu’s therefore pose a challenge to players as well as clubs themselves to do more with regards to collaboration and helping players plan for life after football as early as when they start playing. By so doing, this will help avoid situations whereby players struggle and eventually enter dire situations like Chabangu did. What’s your take on financial discipline in footballers? How is Percy Tau faring in Belgium?

At the start of the new season, many South African football fans and fans from the continent at large were relishing the prospect of seeing former Mamelodi Sundowns gem, Percy Tau donning the colours of English premier league club, Brighton & Hove Albion. However, that was not to be as the club decided to loan Tau to second division Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to help him get some game time before he can be slowly unleashed by the team (Brighton). Now, I am sure some of Tau’s fans are wondering just how is Tau doing in Belgium? Well, below we zoom in on how the South African born player is turning out for his new side and whether or not he can be able to finally get his chance in the English league.

For starters, it seems it hasn’t taken him a lot of time to get going in the Belgian league. Most recently, Tau set tongues wagging with a scintillating performance in a cup game against one of Belgium’s biggest teams in FC Anderlecht. In that game, Tau helped his teammate Youssoufou Niakaté grab a hat trick, earning himself two assists in the process, one of which I am sure Lionel Messi would give props to. Perhaps the most lingering thought on people's mind concerning Tau is whether or not he can make the cut in Europe? It you ask me, I absolutely believe so. Gifted with blistering pace and a deadly eye for goal, Tau certainly has the ammunition he needs to get him started in a tough and highly reputable league such as the English premier league. Nonetheless, the loan period in Belgium should be one where he gets to prove his critics wrong while also making a statement to his Brighton coach, Chris Hughton, that he deserves a place in the starting eleven. PSL Awards: Tau crowned king and could Siphesihle Ndlovu follow his footsteps?

Inarguably the name that has dominated the South African football media throughout the 2017/18 campaign is at it again, this time with a few accolades besides it. Rightfully so, if you ask me. Percy Tau was the biggest winner on Tuesday night at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg where the ABSA Premiership Awards Gala was held. The 24-year-old was received the top two awards in South African football, the prestigious Footballer Of The Season Award and the Players’ Player Of The Season. He also shared the money with Polokwane City’s Rodney Ramagelela for the Top Scorer Award after banging striking eleven times for the PSL Champions, Mamelodi Sundowns. The Sundowns talisman will most likely be nominated for the CAF awards at the end of the year and rumors linking him to European clubs might not be far off now. The Mesut Ozil-like assist that he dished out to Sibusiso Vilakazi in their friendly against Barcelona shows glimpses of his quality and El Hadji Diouf’s praises and prophecy might come true after all.

On the contrary, not much has been said about Maritzburg United’s young playmaker, Siphesihle Ndlovu. The 21-year-old midfielder capped off his breakthrough the season by also getting a brace on the night, winning the ABSA Premiership Young Player Of The Season and the Midfielder Of The Season Awards. Ever since he joined the Team of Choice as the child, graduating from the ball-boy role, he has been on the up. At the time, they actually nicknamed him “Mbesuma,” after the former PSL Top Goal Scorer, Collins Mbesuma. Ndlovu became the first Maritzburg United player to win the ABSA Premiership Player Of The Month in January 2018 and went on to steer the team to a fourth-place finish. Leading up to the awards night, the youngster opened up on the reason behind his success:

I've never thought I could be nominated so soon, but also I think that anything is possible in this world‚ and that if you perform when you give 100 percent in every game‚ you're always focused‚ then anything can happen to you. Naby Keita made it in the German Bundesliga team of the Year in 2017 after guiding RB Leipzig to a second-place finish in the league. The 23-year old has been the engine for one of the Red Bull franchise teams which have progressed in the past two years. The biggest headache that he will give to his new coach, Jurgen Klopp is his versatility. The player can play anywhere in midfield and can still be offensive. He has been linked with clubs like Barcelona, Arsenal, and Liverpool before to show the caliber of player he is. He sure is destined to be a top, top player and it would be a mistake if Liverpool decides not to finalize the deal.

CDM - Wilfred Ndidi

Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi has already started to make a name for himself in the most competitive leagues in Europe. The 21-year old moved to Leicester in January 2017 for £15m from Genk. He has since proved his worth against some of the best tacklers in the game such as N’golo Kante and Idrissa Gana Gueye who are all of the African descent. Ndidi is leading the Premier League charts as the best tackler with 138 in his 33 league appearances. The player also proved that he is an all-round midfielder and can offer more in terms of goal creation as he has scored a goal and provided 3 assists for Leicester in the league and FA Cup. It is exciting to hear that the young Nigerian is being linked with clubs like Arsenal who have had many problems in midfield ever since Patrick Vieira left the club. Ndidi has the potential to be a Premier League great if he makes a wise decision which involves him moving to a bigger club that can take his game to the next level like the likes of Michael Essien did at Chelsea under Mourinho. The season has ended and his focus is on the FIFA World Cup where he will be representing his nation who will play their first match against Croatia. 

The 21-year old midfield enforcer is as good as anyone you can get in his position and will be looking to strike a formidable midfield partnership with former Nigerian teammate and Golden Boy Winner John Obi Mikel who used to play for Chelsea before he left for China. We expect Ndidi to be doing the ‘dirty work’ for the team before distributing the ball to the playmaker who will transition the play to attack and hurt teams like Argentina, Croatia and Iceland in Group D. Wilfred has a long career ahead of him and should be looking to prove his worth especially against Messi’s team if he hopes of moving from being considered a good player to a great player. Arsenal has been reported to be sniffing around the possibility of capturing the talented African midfield enforcer and making him their new Vieira who will shut opponents if they try to break them on the counter. Many comparisons have been drawn between the player and another football legend in Yaya Toure who enjoyed his best years of football in Manchester, England. Kessie has been dubbed the long-term replacement of Yaya Toure in the national team and he has not disappointed. Although the club has had a poor season, Kessie appeared in 36 appearances scoring 5 goals in the process as well as providing 5 assists. Kessie shows early promises of being a dominant enforcer in midfield who can drive his team forward at his own will just like Yaya Toure did in England. The 21-year old comes from the land of Egypt which has produced a 2018 Ballon D’Or contender in Mo Salah and he is as skilled as the Liverpool player. Sobhi is confident on the ball which has seen him represent his club and country on 29 different occasions scoring 3 goals in a process. Not bad for a 21-year old who is not a starter for the English club. CB - Chancel Mbemba

Congolese international Chancel Mbemba currently plies his trade in the English Premier League with Newcastle and plays as a center-back. The 23-year old deputized the injured Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune whenever they were suspended or out injured. The player has not been an instant hit in the English Premier League has started only 7 matches in the league and coming on as a substitute on two different occasions for the relegation-threatened Newcastle. The young African player must be relieved that his team eventually managed to survive which means that he has another opportunity to show his worth in the league unless the club takes a new direction and appoint a new coach who could make wholesome changes in the squad. Mbemba is just 23 and can be a great player if given the opportunity that the likes of Kolo Toure were given by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

RB – Achraf Hakimi

The Spanish-born right back plays for Real Madrid, the biggest club in the history of football. Popularly known as just ‘Achraf’, the player decided to represent the Moroccan national team because of his heritage. the 19-year old is the current second option in the right-back position in Zinedine Zidane’s team. His development as a player pushed Danilo, a £26m signing out of the club. Real Madrid has had some greats in that position before including current club captain Sergio Ramos before he moved into the center-back position. Hakimi is versatile himself and can play in midfield. It is safe to say that the player is in the right place to show if he is capable of competing at the highest level. With a couple of appearances under his belt and under the mentorship of a coach who pays attention to the youth as Zidane, we are guaranteed to be seeing the best of the player in the years to come. For now, we look forward to seeing the player at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 in Moroccan colors.

GK – Andre Onana

22-year old Onana is a goalkeeper for Dutch club Ajax who guided his team to a second-placed finish in the league. Andre Onana hails from Nkol Ngok, Cameroon and is showing early promises of becoming a European hit like his predecessors. To those that watched football between the 80s and 90s, they should remember a famous Liverpool goalkeeper who was from Zimbabwe. Bruce Grobbler was popular for his comedic stunts between the sticks. If not him, then you probably know Vincent Enyeama. One of the African legends who played for Nigeria for the longest time. Andre Onana is on his way. Ajax is a team that has produced some of the best talents in Europe and he has a starting spot on that team. It is just a matter of time before the rest of Europe start bidding in for the keeper of the future who is already amassing 39 appearances in a top league.

South Africa: Meet the self-made Bongani Zungu buzzing in Ligue 1

South African football league, the Absa Premiership, is perhaps one of the most competitive leagues in Africa, funded more than most, marketed expertly and attracts players from all over the continent. It is for this reason that many talented South African professional footballers become trapped in the comfort at home and like most English footballers, spend all their careers playing in the domestic league. The trap which Senegalese legend, El Hadji Diouf, recently challenged  Sundowns’ Percy Tau to overcome. There are a few mavericks though, and Goal recently had an exclusive interview with one, Bongani Zungu.

At 17-years of age, Zungu told himself that if he had not become professional at 20, he would have to quit the game. Supported by a moralistic and stable household, Zungu balanced football and academics and had his big break at in 2010 when Dynamos signed him from lowly Dixieland Stars after impressing at regional playoffs. After spending two years at Dynamos, University of Pretoria acquired the then 21-year-old Zungu who resoundingly shook South African football, appearing 27 times for AmaTuks and attracting interest from a host of top PSL clubs.

After the University of Pretoria came Mamelodi Sundowns where Pitso Mosimane partnered him with a veteran midfielder, Hlompho Kekana in his debut season and helped Bafana BaStyle to their first ABSA Premiership title in seven years. He made his Bafana Bafana debut in 2013 and then went on to realize his European dream by joining Portuguese Primera Liga club Vitoria Guimaraes FC for the 2016/17 season. Zungu battled through injuries and adjusting to the new environment and eventually impressed on his Portuguese debut on 22nd January 2017. For the second half of that season, he outstandingly helped the Portuguese club to a top-four finish and secure Europa League qualification. This resulted in the likes of Villareal, Malaga, Benfica, Hoffenheim, and Mainz vying for his signature - with French Ligue 1 side, Amiens won.

The story of the 25-year-old Bongani Zungu continues in France.
